Natural disasters are a fact of life for residents of Indonesia. The country is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area prone to earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.
There are many examples of natural disasters, such as the recent eruption of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta, which have shown how the physical structure of mosques and their facilities have played an important informal role in post disaster management.
The influence accorded to local religious leaders means that mosques play a greater role than that given to them purely from their physical structures.
The UN study wants to get a deeper understanding of what roles mosques could play in post disaster management along thematic lines.
The Government of Indonesia has yet to develop a formal strategy for incorporating mosques into the government's post disaster response systems. However the Ministry of Religion does recognize the role mosques do play in these situations.
Although many organisations welcome the coordinated approach taken by the report into the role of mosques in post disaster situations, some aid organization are hesitant to directly involve religious institutions in their future relief efforts. (http://www.presstv.ir)
